Ukraine overcame the disappointment of an awful Euro 2008 qualification campaign with a convincing win over Norway that perhaps should have been by a greater margin.
Norway's last match of the current international season ended in predictable disappointment as the boys in red made it seven games without victory to complete their first winless year since 1983.
Some excellent goalkeeping from Stabaek's Jon Knudsen kept the score down early on, but there was no surprise when the hosts took the lead. Still, it came from the penatly spot, as officious referee Romans Lajuks whistled for a foul by Reginiussen on Nazarenko. Seleznyov duly converted the spot-kick.
The Zhovto-Blakytni, despite playing with a somewhat experimental line-up with three newcomers, continued to impress, not least at the back, wherein they restricted the visitors to long-range efforts.
Half time brought with it a substitution, but soon afterwards there was also a bigger change: a red card. Roma left-back John Arne Riise was given his marching orders, apparently for dissent - and much to his disgust.
Milevskiy and Aliyev were to come close for the hosts as the match drew on, but Knudsen remained in fine form. Nonetheless Oleksiy Mykhaylichenko's men recorded their 150th international victory of all time, by their count: Age Hareide's men, meanwhile, bid a bitter farewell to an awful 2008. |
